Dr. Bethea and her team needed to find a way to maintain an effective instructional coaching program that provides the necessary support for their current educators and attracts new, qualified teachers to their district.
Marion County is rural with low income and high unemployment compared to neighboring communities. This makes finding and retaining qualified educators challenging. They have found the needs of their teachers are far greater than the personnel they have available and there is simply not enough time in the day for administrators to visit each classroom regularly. Kandace and her team acknowledge if their teachers are not feeling supported they don’t stick around, so effectively retaining and recruiting teachers has been an obstacle throughout their district.
Solution: Utilizing Video For Teacher Observation and Peer Feedback

Efficiently supporting educators and facilitating their growth is important to maintaining the progressive school environment MCSD is working towards. By implementing the Platform they are now able to provide flexibility to their educators that supports growth, whether that be through PLC collaboration, self-reflection or peer-to-peer feedback. Their administrators can’t be everywhere at once, but through the use of video, they can observe teachers and provide feedback on their own time, without having to be in their classrooms. The video clips work as a common piece of evidence for both the teacher and observer to review, which has been key to teacher growth throughout MCSD. This new structure is encouraging reflection rather than compliance, which is a must when it comes to harboring the school environment educators are seeking.
