Hi, I’m Dawn, from Learners Edge.
Have you ever experienced the late rush when students try to turn in missing work before the end of the grading period? In the end, you’re left with usually, substandard work that’s no longer relevant, and you have a pile of grading to do, when you’re working on your holistic grades. If you choose to allow late work that can be graded, try dividing your quarters, trimesters, or semesters in half, and set two late work deadlines. This gives students a chance to earn credit for work they do, even if it’s turned in late. However, with two turn in dates, students are given a sense of urgency to turn in work sooner, with more effort.
By working with two deadlines per marking period, you aren’t collecting work from the beginning of the marking period. And you aren’t bombarded with a ton of extra grading at the end of the term. When I use this format for late work with high school students, my students actually turned in less late work. And they told me that they felt like they were able to get a second chance to complete something that they missed the first time.
