I change questions from our math series to use information / details that relate to the students. They laugh when they see their names in the question, and share information about places or events that are meaningful to them. I find it helps increase their interest in the problems and has them paying closer attention.

I have found that the more I integrate my student's life experiences with what we are learning the more they contribute and are excited about their learning of math skills. I find the the math
program "Bridges" does a lot of hands on life skills activities that help my students. This class has given me a lot of ideas and it also helped to validate the positive things I do. It also helped me to become aware of things that I need to change.

I try to use students names in what I am doing when it comes to word problems. Also I can keep word problems current with names of famous people who are popular at the moment. The one place I have trouble is when there is so much drill and practice and it seems not to relate to real life at all.
